We had almost 300 entries in thirty-three categories. The competition in each category was extremely stiff. We had about 75 judges who volunteered to review all the books. Every book was judged by at least 3 people; some books in big categories had as many as nine judges. The judges reviewed all the books. And from that 115 Finalists were selected.

Excerpt from The Sarran Plague

"Thirsty," she whispered. Then a strong, gentle hand lifted Anya's head. She nuzzled closer, breathing deeply of fresh linen, vanilla and man, definitely man.

"Drink, Pa Mici, drink," a deep basso voice rumbled.

Anya's eye caught a snapshot of dark blue eyes, tousled midnight black hair. A thin white scar traced along the outline of a square jaw. Her vision was fuzzy around the edges. The hair on his muscled arm tickled across her back. His palm cupped the nape of her neck supporting her head. The thumb stroked downward. She trembled, leaning into the light caress.

The thick fingers of his other hand curved around a filigreed silver tumbler with maroon and gold swirls.

"Please, thirsty," Anya mumbled as her lips pursed round the proffered straw.
"Careful, Pa Mici, lips that shape beg a kiss," the deep voice rumbled.

The juice flowed through her mouth and down her throat easing the dryness. Voices in her mind, one was here, the basso, the other a baritone was close by. The vibrations sang sweet music to her sex. Anya's skin flushed rose. She reached up and traced a finger along the thin scar.

"Your skin is exquisite, Pa Mici. Do you feel us yet? "His soft mobile lips swept light kisses across her cheek and nibbled at the corner of her mouth.

"Name…" she insisted sticking out her lower lip, her mouth in moue.

"Jonal, rest now," the voice soothed.

"Tis such a good dream," Anya whispered as she grabbed his arm. "Please, don't make me wake up."

Please join me today in welcoming Celtic romance author Sheryl Brennan to Mama Writers! Today she’s going to talk to us about her Mommy Strike.

After thirteen years of working a full time day job, writing part time in an attempt to jump start my career in romance fiction, and being a single mom to three very capable girls ages 13,12, and 8, I decided I was done with being stressed out over the undone chores, mounds of laundry that more often than not contained clean as well as dirty children’s clothes, and all manners of accompanying whining, arguing, bickering, and drama.

Therefore, on February 23rd at 6:45 am in the morning I called my sweet cherubs (NOT) into the dining room and wrote the following words in onyx permanent ink on a crisp snow colored piece of poster board:

KIDS UNFAIR TO MOM! MOM IS ON STRIKE!

I proceeded, through gritted teeth and a joker-like smile to let them know what the strike entailed. With a rigid index finger, I pointed to each of my daughters in succession and proclaimed, “I will no longer, cook, clean, or do laundry for you… you… or you. You can either work on an every man for himself basis or cooperate to get the chores done. You choose.”

I think they thought I was kidding, but this was no early April Fool’s prank. When I came home that evening, I was armed with a new attitude and several 8×10 sheets of copy paper bearing slogans adopted for my cause. With double-sided tape I cheerfully posted them on each and every door of the house.

“Labor unfair to management”
“MOM: It’s who’s NOT making dinner”
“Ask not what your mother can do for you, but what you can do for your mother”

The epitome of my signage was a personalized affadavit to the world I proudly hammered into my front yard that read: “Parents of the world unite! Rebecca, Michela, and Areana’s Mom is ON STRIKE. Say no to Housework!”

You can only imagine how many car horn honks I recieved, which made my plight so entirely worth the extra effort. (grin) Operation embarrass the children was a success.

For dinner on the first evening of the strike, the children made themselves spaghetti, then convienently “forgot” to clean up the mess. They further celebrated their new found freedom by going to bed past their bedtime and neglecting the daily chores so harshly put upon them by the enemy— MOM.

Me? I celebrated my lack of stress with a call to my publicist and a nice warm bath, then silently relished in the fact that when the kids would ask why they didn’t have clean underwear for tomorrow I could gleefully reply, “Guess you’ll have to learn how to use the washing machine. I’m on strike.”

To tell you ALL of the funny and not-so-funny things that happened during my hiatus, I would need a weeks worth of blog time, so I’ll skip to the most important part— THE END.

The MOMMY STRIKE lasted a full thirty days. Yup- that’s right, thirty days. You wouldn’t believe how much writing I got done in this time with only having to care, cook, and clean for myself, but the payoff was much bigger than the extra time I gained.

I found this to be a fun read. The author writes well and has a style that keeps the action flowing to the ending. The prudish would probably be offended by the explicit sex scenes that involve male to male love, as well as two men making love with one woman. But looking at it from the point of view of the Sarrans (and as Anya comes to see it), the human body and the soul within that body, is a beautiful thing worthy of being loved.

Chapter 22 At his look of confusion, I tried to explain. “Don’t you see Stefan? We have been drawn toward each other throughout time?” I watched his face as he began to realize what I was explaining to him. “Are you saying each time I felt you near, because you were near?” I watched his face become angry then. “I saw the scars on your body, are they from the reason you had to leave?” “Yeah, some of them got pretty creative, but I guess when you live in fear all you see are monsters.” I thought about it for a minute before I got another bad idea. “Someone set me up! Not only would I have never been cured, but she would love the pain I would go through. We need to make sure she cannot get to either you or the baby. She will stop at nothing now to kill you if she found out you carrying my child!” “Great, just great, not only will she try to use me and punish you, but she can use the twins to hurt Max as well!” I realized in the next instant what I had just said, when was I will be going to learn to control my emotions. “What do you mean twins? How could you possibly know you are already carrying twins? I know Max is cursed but what does that have to with the child or should I say children you are carrying.” Taking a deep breath, I told him of the dreams then. “I am sorry you had to find out like this, but Max thought it would be best to wait, and I agreed with him. I was going to tell you in a few days but I hadn’t figured out how yet.” “A few days! Why could not you have told me when you did Max, or at the least right after? Did you honestly believe I would hurt you or the children? I love you Em, I always have. I would rather die than cause you any more pain!” He grabbed my arms then, but I knew it was from shear frustration. I softly placed a hand on the side of his face pulling him down. “I am sorry Stefan for all the pain you have suffered because of me. I promise to make it up to you. I don’t know how yet but I will.” The grandfather clock struck midnight then. “I think we have had enough for one night and probably should be getting to bed now. If it’s all right with you, can we finish this in the morning?” I had begun to pull away then but he stopped me. “I can think of one way you can make all I have been through easier. May I please have a kiss before you go to bed, alone?”

My Mother was dead. My Father, the King, was being forced to wed my Aunt Brigit. My worst supporter, Fearghus, was now my closest ally. CHAPTER 1
Returning Home

Two years ago my family and other stockholders had been thinking of selling the winery to Grant but I had refused. I asked Harry to draw up the necessary papers to allow my inheritance to take place before my 30th birthday. I then used Sinfully Chocolate, the business Keith had left me, as collateral to get the money to buy out the major stockholders ensuring that the Winery would remain mine.

Now both businesses are in danger, the bad grapes from four years earlier have finally caught up with us, and Sinfully Chocolate needs a major boost in sales. In hopes of coming up with a new angle and flow of cash, I head home to the Vineyard for Christmas to find our salvation.

“Ambrosia I don’t suppose I can talk you out of going home?” Harry asked standing in the doorway.
I stopped packing and turned to my closest friend, attorney, and now business partner. “No, but you can come with me.”
“I would but I have a meeting with a prospective client for Sinfully Chocolate, they have retail chains of delectable chocolates in about every mall on the East Coast. The meeting is at their family estate instead of their local office. You could have your mother come here instead.”
I turned then to look at him, I mean really look at him. He seemed normal, his brown hair and eyes were the same, and the sweet friendly smile was still there. But something was different about him, there had to be. It was the only logical reason for him to even suggest that Mother come here.
“You know I cant, I have to see how the vineyard is doing, besides mother is throwing her annual Christmas Ball and my presence is expected.” Sighing I turned back to the suitcase. I really don’t know why I even bothered with it.

It was the same every year, I would take with me what I wanted to wear, but Mother would always complain that it did not reflect my station or the family’s lineage appropriately. Mother would then bring out what she had decided on there was always an entire wardrobe picked for me, along with any party dresses she deemed necessary. Don’t get me wrong I love my Mother and the winery very much, but sometimes being the only child and heir was more than it was worth.

“Well I know how much you hate packing to please your Mother so I guess I will leave you to it.” Harry took a minute to look at all the strewn clothes and I wondered if he was thinking that I was crazy.

Once Harry left I finally stopped holding my breath. He did the same thing every time I mentioned my family or what outfit I was going to wear to meet a business associate; he would just stare at me or the clothes everywhere with a confused and sometimes angry look on his face. I wanted to ask him about it but changed my mind each time I might just not want to know.

Looking at the clothing I chose once more I sighed in resignation as I closed the suitcase. I paused in my packing to look around my home.

As I entered the garden, the smell of succulent roses and jasmine infused me. I continued upon an emerald and ruby path, glinting like a wine-filled goblet. Gliding over pearls and bright quartz, I headed for the waterfalls, the soft lining of moss caressing my feet.

In all of Fay Island, this was my sanctuary. A place I could be myself and forget royal burdens and courtly duties. As a young woman in search of my inner self, I naturally dreamed of my perfect mate.

In the center of the Garden, a mist spilled against the steep rocks. I contemplated the brilliance flowing through each cascading stream beneath the spray. It cast a shimmering silver hue in its depths. The falls played sweet music.

"They say when the water is such color, magic is trying to reach out to a Fay," Aine said.

I turned and took in her true beauty, hidden behind a garment of deep red. The hood draping her face normally left all but her eyes invisible, but I was struck at the mane of red hair flowing around her body. Like silk caressing her radiant face.

As I contemplated Aine, I could not understand why she hid behind the red shroud. Her beauty was astounding.

"If the water changed for one Fay, then who is it? You and I are the only ones here."

"It is waiting to receive you. I have been here for some time, and the water did not change until you arrived."

The look of poise on her face made me wonder if she might be right. I turned toward the water, sensing it call to me, beckoning me to step in.

I do not know whether it was Aine's faith, or the water itself, but I waded in before I could stop to think.

The water swirled around my body, stroking each curve with an intimate caress. I expected it to be cooler as I waded further in, but instead, it grew hot. Aine had been right. The water was responding to my touch, my intimate power. I was sure of it. Since my birth, there had not been such as this given. For whatever reason, I was to receive an old and precious gift.

"Do not be frightened, Princess, let the water carry you, comfort you, love you. Let it give you it's offering in great joy. Know that, of the entire Fay, you are the one to receive a blessing from it."

Aine's words made sense. The water's magic wanted to love me, caressing my body with its essence, giving me the bounty it was. It was now up to me to love it in return.

Taking her words and my thoughts to heart, I closed my eyes and opened my arms. The water pushed against my thighs, and I lifted my feet in response. Cradling me in lover's arms, the water held my head above itself, before carrying me into its depth.

Not once did I panic. I trusted the water as though it were my lover. The magic of the moment provided all I needed to survive. Opening my eyes, the water radiated silvery magic and faded to midnight blue, pulsating with resilient energy.

Part of my mind screamed of the danger surrounding me, but my heart could only rejoice.

At that moment, I saw him. His eyes were indigo, with silver flecks of the same vividness as the water surrounding us. A ring of forest green surrounded the blue.

The coal black hair made his creamy skin rich. Everything about him left no doubt to any of my senses. My whole body vibrated. Interview with Sheryl Brennan

Jen: This weekend we welcome debut author Sheryl Brennan. Sheryl, will you please share a short bio with us?
Sheryl:Hi, Jen. Thanks for having me here today. A little about me… A little about me… well, let's see. It was a sunny and delightful fall weekday in October. The incessant cries of a baby girl rang out from the stark hospital room of Fort Patterson Army hospital. (laughing) Just kidding.

I am a divorced mother of three girls ages 12,11 and 7. I work full time selling industrial safety supplies in Louisville, Kentucky, and write part time, waiting to be plucked out of obscurity. (laughing) I love to laugh, joke around, and have a little fun with my friends. Can't you tell?

Jen: Tell us about Celtic Sacrifice and where it's available.
Sheryl:Celtic Sacrifice is a historical romance set in 16th century Ireland during the end of the English/Irish Nine Years war. The story follows Ceana O'Hagan, the daughter of the chieftain of Dungannon, whom her mother's clan of O'Connor feel is the key to a generation's old prophecy. Over the course of the book, we get to see Ceana's personal struggles with love, religion, and her own place in the world. There isa very interesting political plot twist that I won't give away… but it shakes Ceana's beliefs down to their very foundation.

One of the overall themes in the book is that God, by any name you call him, has a plan for you. (Jeremiah 29:11) Free will being what it is one of my constant prayers is that if I am straying off that path, he will guide me back to it. I've seen this play out in my life many times, and a masking my readers to email me when they have finished reading the book to tell me about a time when they felt a higher power was guiding their own steps.

Celtic Sacrifice is currently on pre-sale through Underdog Press at http://www.underdogpress.com.Because Underdog is a new publisher, they are in the process of selecting a distribution network so readers can find it at their local bookstore when it is released in March.

Jen: At what age did you discover writing and when were you first published? Tell us your call story.
Sheryl:I have written in one form or another since I was in sixth grade, but I didn't really start writing seriously until July of 2007 after I graduated from Business School. My path to publication took a couple of twists and turns. My first publisher closing their doors earlier this year. After dialoging with Kelly, the CEO of Underdog Press, she agreed to take on Celtic Sacrifice as not only my debut novel, but Underdog's.It is both exciting and frightening to be the first author for a fledgling small press. It's been a learning process for all of us, butwell worth it in my opinion.

Jen: How does your family handle the time that you write? Are they supportive or disruptive?
Sheryl:A little of both. I can't ask for better word of mouth marketers than my family, but at the same time, my girls can't seem to understand that you have to view this as a part-time job. With three busy girls it is a juggling act to get everything done for sure!

Jen: How do you approach your writing? Do you plot or go with the flow?
Sheryl:Both. I start out as a pantser, but then usually after about chapter 5 I turn into a plotter and use several different techniques. I want to make sure I don't forget anything and writing romance is formulaic, so it helps to plot things out.

Jen: How many hours a day do you write?
Sheryl:My New Year's resolution this year is Progress not Perfection, so I'm going more for word count than a number of hours. My goal is 3000 words a day. I don't make it every time, but at least by measuring word count rather than time spent, you can see progress.

Jen: How do you pick the character's names?
Sheryl: I use a very complex method. A combination of imagination, internet research, and a book of Irish baby names. LOL.

Jen: What did you do to celebrate the sale of your first book?
Sheryl:I wanted my family to feel as though it was as much their accomplishment as it was mine, so I took them out for a celebratory dinner at Applebee's. Ever since, my daughter's have been my best marketers.

Jen: Where do you draw your inspiration?
Sheryl:For most of my stories, it is the everyday struggles of life and my own inner longing, but for Celtic Sacrifice it was different. I can't tell you exactly where the inspiration came from. It was as though the characters whispered their life stories to me and I was the conduit to get them on paper. A very other-worldly experience.

Jen: Do you have a favorite character or one that you identify most with?
Sheryl:Ceana was a character that I felt most at home with. I see many of her character traits in myself and struggle with the same issues sheen counters. I think all authors want to be the star of their own stories and do things on paper they can't do in the real world.

Jen: What's the most interesting comment you have received about your books?
Sheryl: One of the most interesting rejection letters I received was after I got the contract for Celtic Sacrifice. A New York publishing house editor told me that my characters were dynamic, the world I had built was colorful, and the story very intriguing, but in their experience English Regencies sold better than Celtic titles and encouraged me to query again when I had an English set story. The funniest part of that is the end of Celtic Sacrifice takes place in Wales!

Jen: Who are some of your favorite authors and books? What are you reading now?
Sheryl:I am simply mad for anything Jane Austen. I enjoy reading her work while I'm writing because it puts me in a historical mood. I am afraid of taking on another author's voice, so I don't typically read within my genre while I am writing. LOL. Before I started writing you could most often find me reading Joanna Lyndsey, Sandy Blair, or anything remotely historical or Celtic.

Jen: What do you do in your free time?
Sheryl:Free time? What is that? Ha Ha. When I am not working, spending time with my three daughters, or writing, I enjoy dancing and singing.Another one of my New Year's resolutions is to learn how to Swing Dance. I can't wait to start!

Jen: What's next for you?
Sheryl:I'm currently working on the sequel to Celtic Sacrifice entitled Celtic Hope which is tentatively scheduled for a June 2009 released date.

Sheryl:Absolutely. I'd love to know how many readers are looking for something new and unique within the genre. Romance novels tend to be formulaic,meaning the plot follows the same basic outline each time. Do your readers enjoy reading that traditional formula or are they thirsting for something different from the norm?
